What is a magnet school?

Magnet schools promote academic opportunity and excellence over their regular counterparts. Magnet schools offer attractive programs and instructional strategies that are specifically designed to hold the interest of students and to keep them actively engaged in learning. All students will receive the core curriculum enhanced by the magnet school's theme. All students will have the opportunity to match their interest to a school theme while focusing on excellence in academics.

CMSD Magnet Elementary Schools

Joe Cook Fine Arts Magnet

The Fine Arts Magnet School at Joe Cook Elementary offers a strong academic curriculum enhanced with the integration of visual and performing arts, dance, strings, drama/theater, and choral music. Research shows a strong positive relationship between the arts and academic success.

Fairview Aerospace & Science Magnet

Fairview offers a high quality academic program infused with Math and Science education. A research-based Science Exploration Lab offer students an opportunity for in-depth studies of physical science, earth science, and life science. Research shows math and science education are critical components to prepare students to compete in a global workforce.

Franklin Medical Sciences & Wellness Magnet

Franklin offers a strong academic program infused with a Medical Arts and Wellness theme. Students will engage in unique learning experiences that encourage healthy living through the study of the medical sciences. Students will explore how the body functions and will learn how medical professionals keep us healthy. A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor found health care related careers are one of the fastest growing industries in our nation.

Sale International Studies Magnet

Sale offers a strong academic program infused with international and global studies to enhance the learning experiences of students. This theme features the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) which offers a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving strategies for a world class education.

Stokes-Beard Technology & Communication Magnet

Stokes-Beard offers a strong academic program infused with technology and communication. This theme features state-of-the-art technology including digital classrooms, broadcasting studio, podcasting, and dynamic learning. Research tells us the 21st Century Learner must have mastery of technology and communication skills to be successful.

SPRING LOTTERY

A school placement process called the lottery occurs each spring to provide new students early placement and allow parents of current students the option to apply to move their student(s) to a different school.

Applicants

Students are placed in a school thought a lottery process in the spring of each. Students new to the district after the lottery deadline will begin the process through the district's online registration system. After notification of placement, the parent/guardian can continue with the registration process.

During the lottery window, applications will be accepted from a parent or legal guardian of Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade students who reside within the attendance zones for CMSD.

Pre-Kindergarten Students

Your child will be four years old on or before September 1 of the current year.

Kindergarten Students

Your child will be five years old on or before September 1 of the current year.

New Students

Your child is NEW to the Columbus Municipal School District if he/she does not currently attend one of the Columbus schools. It is necessary to bring a certified birth certificate and an up-to-date copy of the Immunization Compliance Form (MS Form 121) - Shot Record to Brandon Central Services at 2630 McArthur Drive before an assignment to a school can be made. Parents/guardians of pre-kindergarten students must also have a proof of income - W-2 or 1040 tax return, check stub, child support, TANF or SSI.

Current Students

Your child CURRENTLY attends a Columbus Magnet School in Pre-Kindergarten through fourth grade and you wish to APPLY for a DIFFERENT Magnet School

If a CURRENT STUDENT wishes to remain in their current placement, DO NOT submit a lottery application. Your child will automatically have a seat in his or her current Magnet School for next year.
